Hello, everyone. Welcome to another edition of the Empowering Entrepreneurs podcast. I’m Glenn Harper.
Julie Smith: 00:00:51
Julie Smith. Glenn Harper: 00:00:52
We got a fun thing to talk about today. You’re going to talk a little bit.
Julie Smith: 00:00:56
Well, I finally drew the short straw and get something that I enjoy talking about.
Glenn Harper: 00:01:00
This is going to be great. Go ahead.
Julie Smith: 00:01:02
g to achieve in let’s call it: 2026 Glenn Harper: 00:01:12
You mean your New Year’s Eve resolutions? Those type of things?
Julie Smith: 00:01:15
Yeah, those types of things that people do. You know, I think people do those, but it’s like you lose track of whatever it is that you’re trying to achieve.
You make it, you know, sometime in December and I forget the fail day just happened, but it’s like by this date in January, like people have already forgot about them, not achieving them, not even thinking about them.
Glenn Harper: 00:01:36
Does that include going to the gym?
Julie Smith: 00:01:38
Yeah, I think that’s on it.
Glenn Harper: 00:01:40
Okay.
Julie Smith: 00:01:40
You know, to bring it back to like business, like whether you’re in growth mode, you’re scaling, you’re building whatever it is, you’re trying to rein in some of those costs, whatever it is that you’re doing, you make these big goals. Right. Something that is big because we always want to do something that’s lofty. Right.
Glenn Harper: 00:01:58
It’s either a goal or I’m not doing that again.
Julie Smith: 00:02:01
Correct.
Glenn Harper: 00:02:01
It’s gonna be one or the other.
Julie Smith: 00:02:03
One or the other.
And so, you know, as Glenn and I were going through this at the end of the year, I gifted both of us a really nice book that I thought would really help us achieve, really backing into achieving the goals. Because although I think we’re both goal oriented and achieve, it’s like, how do you break it down to assure that you do achieve them?
Glenn Harper: 00:02:26
I was thinking was a Zane Green western novel, but no, it’s a self.
Julie Smith: 00:02:29
Help book and he hasn’t even opened it. So little to know. I’ll let you know that I read it so we can talk about how we can do this though. you not achieve whatever your: 2026
Like if you’re in growth mode or scale mode, what actions are you taking in order to get to where you are? Sometimes I feel like, okay, we’re going to grow by 20%. Well, what does that Mean, again, what.
Glenn Harper: 00:03:00
It means is that you have the goals, but you didn’t write down the action plan. And if you don’t write down the action plan, it’s just a dream.
Julie Smith: 00:03:07
And I think that goes back to really reeling into what that is and making small wins to get to the big win.
Glenn Harper: 00:03:15
Correct. And I think if you defining what you want, defining the action plan, that’s going to need to get you to that and then stick with it.
Work the plan well.
Julie Smith: 00:03:26
And as entrepreneurs, what are we doing daily to achieve that?
Glenn Harper: 00:03:30
Putting out fires mostly and getting better.
Julie Smith: 00:03:32
That’s not going to get you to where you need to be.
Glenn Harper: 00:03:34
Correct. And that’s where you have to set the time aside. You have to make the commitment. Just like going to the gym or eating, eating healthy, whatever.
The thing is, you gotta set aside the time to say, I’m gonna work on the plan. I have this action item I need to do today a little bit, tomorrow a little bit, the next day, and just keep working the plan.
And eventually you’ll wake up and you’ll be there.
Julie Smith: 00:03:51
And I’m curious if anyone has guessed what book that I gifted. Glenn over here, that he is, probably doesn’t even know where it is at this point.
Glenn Harper: 00:03:59
I know right where it is in my to read book.
Julie Smith: 00:04:01
But I definitely think in order to achieve what you’re going to achieve, and you know how relative this is, that we’ve just passed the fail day in January of whatever those New Year’s resolutions is, that you have to do something small every day to achieve something big or it just gets lost. And you’re just going to do whatever you did last year and you’re going to be in the same boat come next December to set the same goal.
Glenn Harper: 00:04:25
Well, I figured if I’d start the book after the fail date, I can’t fail. I’m golden.
Julie Smith: 00:04:31
There’s always a plan over there. Always a plan.
Glenn Harper: 00:04:33
That’s what I’m going with. I think I’m going to have great success with that. Julie Smith: 00:04:35 atever you want to achieve in: 2026 What you did in: 2025
Glenn Harper: 00:04:54
You know, it’s funny too. You get to choose usually which way you go.
You’re either avoiding pain or you’re choosing something that’s going to resurrect or reborn you to do something better or greater. And. And it’s hard as an entrepreneur, just a person, we’re always reacting to the pain.
It’s hard to plan out doing something that is rewarding instead of just trying to avoid pain. So if you can figure that out, that is the key to this whole thing. Would you agree?
Julie Smith: 00:05:23
Yeah. Pain.
Glenn Harper: 00:05:24
Pain or a different fear.
Julie Smith: 00:05:26
Right.
Glenn Harper: 00:05:27
Pain or fear.
Julie Smith: 00:05:28
But being on this side of it is much more rewarding than being on that side. As entrepreneurs, humans, we’re always going to have to deal with this, but why not do something that’s enjoyable and getting you towards your goals?
Glenn Harper: 00:05:39
Who wants to fight or flight all the time? Why not do something that makes it nice to do?
Julie Smith: 00:05:43
So should I take you to the gym after this?
Glenn Harper: 00:05:45
Yes. Yes. I’m going to read the book because I’m past the date, so I got to start on that today, so.
Well, hopefully that’s helpful to all of you today and we look forward to you on our next episode. It’s the Empowering Entrepreneurs Podcast. I’m Glenn Harper.
Julie Smith: 00:05:56
